Ice skates with curled runner blades
All ice skates with blades that are not
completely embedded in wooden platforms
are considered as having
'curled runner blades' or 'curled prows'.
The curls can have a variety of
appearances, such as:
• small simple curls;
• large turned over curls with forged tips or some kind of
finials;
• sturdy wide forged tips;
• simple flat tips.
Until the end if the 19th
century ice skating was not much more than a winter
pastime.
People moved around a bit, played a game, chatted and laughed a
lot
and used some 'refreshments'.
Only a few could write their
initials or those of their beloveds in the ice.
And those that
were able to measure their strength in a race against the clock
were even scarce.
It lasted until the end of the 19th century
before this picture changed.
Ice skates of former times therefore cannot be divided well in
skates for speed or
figure skating. Depending on the wishes of
the owner runners were grinded
just a bit rounder or straighter.
So, ice skates with curled runners were more or less
'common' ice skates for general use.
